About the Yaam
Welcome to the Caribbean in Berlin
The institution that is Yaam is one of the last and oldest Reggae/Dancehall/Hip-Hop clubs that Berlin has to offer. Though it has changed addresses Yaam has been around since 1994 and continues to offer way more than the word "club" implies. In summer Yaam is like a small parallel universe filled with beach bars, sand, water and culinary treats from the Caribbean. In the summer you can enjoy the vacation like feeling during the day and the bustling city atmosphere during the night on the two dance floors. The very relaxed and laid back crowd is a nice change of pace compared to the almost machine like crowd of the electro clubs in Berlin.
Year round Yaam offers special events such as themed concerts with flown in DJs or the now cult hit Supersonic-Sound-Clashes, and all this with a Caribbean flair. Despite everything Yaam has still managed to keep up with the times. The club continuously succeeds with various excursions into vastly different music genres to attract new customers and at the same time keep things fresh for the regulars.
Unfortunately there is a black cloud gathering over this paradise world. Described as a "schmuddeliger Schandfleck (filthy eyesore)" even this wonderful local, that is above everything a social culture and youth project, is supposed to be wiped off Berlin's map for the construction of apartment buildings when the calendar flips to 2014. The current state of affairs is for Yaam to move to the former location of Areal der Maria (located at the Schillingbrücke), however even this move hangs in the balance as it still lacks Senate approval.
Germany's most famous Soundsystem Sentinel Soundsystem is regularly at Yaam. Soundcloud offers a good preview of the music played at Yaam.
